corner kick

Corner Kick
Indicates the corner
where the kick will
originate.

goal kick

Goal Kick
Extends his or her
arm in the direction
of the goal area.

 penalty kick

Penalty Kick
Points to the penalty
mark in the penalty
box.

 direct free kick

Direct Free Kick
Extends his or her
arm in the direction
of the kick.

 indirect free kick

Indirect Free Kick
Raises his or her arm
above the head. This
signal is maintained
until the kick has
been taken and the
ball has touched
another player or
goes out of play.

play on advantage

Play on Advantage
Both arms in motion signal
the players to “play on”
even though a foul has
been committed.

 send off

Caution/Sending Off
Holds up a yellow or
red card, depending
on the action, to the
player causing the
misconduct.

Assistant Referee Signals

offside

Offside
Holds a flag straight up,
then straight out to
signal the referee that
a player is offside.

substitution

Substitution
Holds a flag overhead
between his or her
hands to signal the
referee that a player
is requesting to substitute.
